In 1978, the Ghent-based Rooie Vlinder, a radical queer organization, organized the very first Belgian Pride in Ghent. A celebration and a protest all in one. After a few years, the Rooie Vlinder spread its wings to Antwerp and Brussels. The organization fought for equal rights and thus played a crucial role within the LGBTQIA+ community of that time.

Today, 46 years later, there is no Pride in Ghent. Have we acquired all the rights then? Why is the city where it all began lagging behind today?

Strengthened by the legacy of the Rooie Vlinder, various queer artists reinterpret their past with a contemporary perspective.

In doing so, they create an attempt to meet the desire for a festive, activist ritual in which connection, community, and the search for identity and freedom take center stage, in a world full of uncertainty and oppression.
